Danaus Sanctuary, Campesino, and Arenal Volcano Tour by the Lake - La Fortuna, Costa Rica

This tour takes you to see all of Arenal’s top attractions, including the Danaus Sanctuary and a sustainable Campesino farm tour. You’ll also get to experience the alluring northern lowlands landscape. On this tour, you’ll get to combine boating and hiking on a nature tour that takes you to some of the area’s best views.

Campesino is an eco-farm that allows you to experience a sustainable farm and fresh, homemade Costa Rican drinks and treats. Your samples include traditional chocolate as well as freshly squeezed sugar cane. You’ll also learn about sustainable farming and local culture.

At the Danaus Sanctuary, you’ll see some of the wildlife that has made a comeback thanks to the rebounding forest. When you’re here, you’ll get to see a multitude of orchid and butterfly species. Reptiles, birds, and other animals scurry around the forest and your guide will be able to tell you how the sanctuary is making it possible for these populations to thrive anew.

On your visit to Arenal Volcano, you’ll set off on 1 mile (1.5 km) of easy trail hiking. This trail lets you see impressive, sweeping views of both Arenal Volcano and the Tilarán Mountain Range. At the end of the walk, you’ll get to climb up to the top of a 32-foot (10-m) observation tower. During this part of the tour, your guide will tell you about the area’s natural history and geological formations.

Next, you’ll stop to snack on local treats at the tropical fruit buffet. Then it’s time for a boat ride around Arenal Lake, where you’ll get to observe the marine birds perching on the lake’s little islands. From the boat, you’ll have a perfect vantage for photographing the mist-shrouded slopes of the Arenal Volcano.
