Magmatic Earthquake Simulator

Magmática offers visitors an immersive tour of Costa Rica’s geology. On a tour of the facility you’ll get to see the center’s main attraction — the earthquake simulator that gives you and idea of what it’s like to experience a powerful earthquake.

This simulator can recreate earthquakes of different magnitudes. It can simulate a 6.4-magnitude earthquake, which is the same magnitude as the earthquake that occurred in Cartago in 1910 and killed over 700 people. The strongest earthquake it can simulate registers an 8.8 on the Richter scale.

Magmática serves to generate interest in the science that helps seismologists predict earthquakes. Seismologists want to ensure that people in the affected areas can get to safety before the earthquake occurs.

Magmática also has exhibits on volcanoes. You’ll see entertaining, interactive displays that let you get to know Costa Rica’s wildlife. At the end of the tour you’ll come away with a good grounding in the tectonic forces that shape Costa Rica’s landscape.
