Volunteer at a Snake Breeding Project

The Serpentarium is a one-of-a-kind project in Costa Rica that helps with snake conservation, research, and rescue. If you’re interested in snakes or other reptiles and want to learn more about them, this is the right project for you.

Volunteer at a Snake Breeding Project

Grecia

The Serpentarium was opened in 1994 by two Austrian snake specialists. Today, the project protects over 50 species of snakes that hail from around the world. In particular, it is involved in fascinating research on one of the world’s most venomous snakes, the bushmaster. The staff harvest venom from the snakes and send it to the United States and Europe to develop life-saving medications and homeopathic remedies. The Serpentarium is also involved in a successful breeding project for endangered snakes. This helps keep the genetic pool sustained and also contributes to the base of knowledge on endangered snakes.

Location

This project is located in Grecia in Costa Rica’s Central Valley.

Responsibilities

Volunteers work closely with staff and other volunteers. Volunteers help with general duties at the Serpentarium, including feeding the animals, cleaning cages, maintaining the mice and rat populations, and helping with snake research. You’ll also assist with tours.

Volunteers are expected to work 5 days a week for 6-8 hours per day. The Serpentarium prefers volunteers who can commit to a minimum of 2 weeks.

Food & Lodging
You will stay with a host family that lives close to the project. You will receive three meals each day, which usually consist of rice, beans, vegetables, and juice.

Qualifications

You don’t need to speak Spanish, since the project supervisors and coordinators speak English. However, knowing some Spanish will be helpful. You don’t need a degree or previous experience, but you should be at least 19 years old.

Applying

The application process is simple. Supply your basic information (name, age, address, medical history, etc.) then choose a project and select the dates that you would like to work. Next, write a brief background and describe any relatable experiences (volunteering or employment). Finally, explain why you want to volunteer and what you can contribute.

After submitting your online application, you will receive a response within a week. Once your enrollment is confirmed, you’ll be given additional information to help you prepare for the project.
