Rancho Makena offers simple rooms just 3 miles (5 km) outside of Santa Elena and Children’s Eternal Rainforest reserves. Family-run hospitality make these down-to-earth accommodations especially welcoming. The ranch’s 50 acres (20 ha) started out as a dairy farm, which is still going strong today.
Of course, the nearby Santa Elena reserve provides an incredible place to see butterflies and orchids in the wild. But if you want to make sure you’ve seen all the biodiversity that Monteverde has to offer, consider making trips to the surrounding species exhibits, where you can get up close to some of these rare, colorful species. When you’re feeling peckish, you’ll want to check out the women’s cooperative called CASEM, a women’s cooperative where you can browse local artwork. You should also make sure to visit some of the cafes that serve ice cream and coffee sourced from Monteverde farms.
Guests are free to tour the dairy farm, or stroll around the lodge’s gardens. In the main building, you can unwind in the TV lounge and use the telephone. The lounge as well as all of the accommodations have Wi-Fi. If you want to quickly get into the downtown area, you can take the ranch’s convenient morning and afternoon shuttle.
All of the buildings here are built using sustainable, reforested wood. Standard rooms don’t have kitchens, but guests staying in these rooms can help themselves to the hearty breakfast that’s included as part of their stay. If you’d like to have your lunch and dinner here, let the staff know in advance and they’ll rustle up a satisfying meal using local ingredients. The three-bedroom cabin has a kitchenettes, so you can stock them with ingredients from the local shops. (Note: breakfast is not included with the 3-bedroom house.)

Feedback from Travelers
The breakfast was great and the views are fabulous! Wasn't quite what I was expecting and was a little further out of town than I had realized, so definitely recommend having a car if you stay here, but the owners are great and lovely to talk to!
very friendly staff. Went out of the way for make us custom breakfast and to provide warm clothes (jackets, sweaters) so we could enjoy a horseback riding trip. The cowboy was very accommodating on the horseback tour, including running the horses to give the kids the thrills they wanted.
