San Lucas Island Boat Tour

This tour takes you to San Lucas Island Prison, which was one of Costa Rica’s roughest prisons from 1873 until 1991. On this tour, you’ll see the network of prison cells, as well as a few much older archeological sites.

Prisoners’ days were filled with hard labor, and guards could do whatever they wanted to the inmates, including torture them. This site is rumored to be haunted by several apparitions, and Ghost Hunters International filmed a 2010 episode here. Long before the prison opened, native people farmed the land and fished for their food. Sites here date back to 1,500 AD.

Your tour starts with a ride on a 26-foot (8-m) boat. After a short ride, you’ll arrive at the same dock where prisoners first arrived. Ghostly images adorn the prison walls — drawing and words left behind by forlorn prisoners.

Hike along the island’s trails to reach the rocky beaches where prisoners would break rocks as part of their punishment. There are also scenic beaches where your tour group can take a break to swim and lounge. This tour lasts 4 to 5 hours and includes a picnic-style lunch, which will take place either on the beach or back at the dock.
