Hotel Don Carlos is located in one of the oldest sections of San José – Barrio Amón. Within walking distance are parks, restaurants, casinos, and museums.
Although not typically a destination in and of itself, San José – the nation’s capital – is nonetheless a convenient and sometimes captivating city. As a cultural hub, it provides travelers with several attractions, including museums, zoos, parks, and plazas. Shopping can be done, restaurants can be sampled, and bars can be hopped. Its weather is very temperate and its tourism services are extensive. Chances are that most travelers will spend a night or two in San José while entering or leaving the country – a period of time that is conducive to the rigors of international travel.
Hotel Don Carlos has been run by the same family for three generations, and it shows –from the entryway to the bedroom, a warm attention to detail is obvious at every turn. Orchids and statues decorate the public areas, and a large tile mural depicting the history of San José is housed in the lobby. The house itself has a rich cultural heritage as well, having served as the residence for two former presidential families.
Each room at Hotel Don Carlos is different, though a common thread runs through all, comfortable beds, cable TV, a private hot water bathroom and safe deposit box find their way into each room. Colorful artwork decorates the walls, ceiling fans keep the temperature cool, and desks provide an ideal spot for writing or typing. Most rooms have large windows, and several even have views of the Irazú and Barva volcanoes.
A stay here includes a continental breakfast in the hotel’s restaurant and a complimentary drink in the hotel’s bar. The helpful staff can help arrange tours and car rentals, meetings and conferences. And whether you’re coming or going, the hotel’s gift shop is one of the best in the country, a perfect place to purchase a last-minute souvenir for someone at home.
