A sheltered and somewhat remote bay along the southern Lombok coast, Blongas has an abundance of marine activities to satiate the active traveler. Epic dive spots, surfable waves, great fishing, and a ring of white sand beaches surround this little-known gem. Blongas is the center of Lombok’s pearl cultivation industry. It’s located along the southern coast in West Lombok Regency, about 2 hours south of Mataram.
Blongas, also known as Belongas, is rather isolated. The roads leading to it are rough, with lots of twists and turns. It’s easier to take a boat from the pier in Lembar (1 hour south of Mataram) than to attempt the drive. The village of Buwun Mas, on the northwest side of the bay, is the center of activity. Lodging can be found scattered around the perimeter of the bay in the form of lodges and homestays. Many of these are quite far from town and dining options.
The diving at Blongas is the main attraction. There are a half dozen sites featuring differing depths, conditions, and marine life. The most well-known is The Magnet, a site that offers a challenging open sea dive with scalloped hammerhead sharks. Another signature dive site is The Cathedral, where it's common to spot eagle rays, white tip reef sharks, and sea snakes. Smaller sea creatures like pygmy seahorses, harlequin shrimp, and nudibranch are found along with devil rays at Gili Sarang. Several dive operators are found in Buwun Mas.
The bay has two decent offshore surf breaks with fun waves for intermediate and experienced surfers. The west side has a short, punchy right-hander, and the east has a longer, hollower left. Exercise caution, as the waters are reputed to be sharky. This is due to the deep waters and an abundance of food in the bay, which also makes it good for fishing. You can fish from the beach or go out with the local fishermen in the afternoon on a charter to try your luck catching tuna, mackerel, and wahoo.
Blongas has beautiful white sand beaches to relax on while admiring the stunning beauty of the bay. The main beach is near the village, and Pelican Beach is to the east. You can check out the local pearl cultivation and see how these gems of the sea are grown and harvested. There are also easily climbed hills that afford panoramic vistas of this beautiful and underappreciated region.
