While you’re in Portobelo you’ll explore the town’s most well-known sights. You’ll get to see the San Gerónimo Fort, which was built in the 17th century by the Spanish. From here you’ll have a lovely view of the Portobelo Bay.
Then you’ll sightsee at the town’s waterfront, which is called La Guaira. At a local church, you’ll stop to see Portobelo’s most famous attraction – a crucifix carved out of dark wood known as Cristo Negro, or “Black Christ.” No one is sure how the statue arrived in Portobelo, and its origins are stepped in legend. It is most likely to have been imported during the 17th-century by the Spanish. There is a festival in honor of this icon every year in October.
Next, you will climb aboard a truck and make your way through Panama’s incredible landscape. After you reach the dock travel by boat to the island known as Isla Grande. This pristine island is home to a small population of fishermen. You’ll get to see the island’s isolated beaches and stop for lunch at a local hotel.
