More about Puerto Montt, Chile
Even the locals are not huge fans of the city, jokingly calling it ¨Muerto Montt” or “Dead Montt”. The city was named after former president of Chile Manuel Montt who while in power between 1851 and 1861 began encouraging German immigration. Many of these immigrants settled in Chile’s Lakes District and helped create the distinctive blend of German and Chilean culture that makes the region truly one of a kind.
Armed with the largest airport in the Lakes District and an effective bus system, Puerto Montt is the region’s transportation hub. It is the southern anchor of the Lakes District and as far south as you can travel in Chile without braving dirt roads that demand four wheel drive. You will undoubtedly pass through its gates on your way to better things, from Chiloé to Puerto Varas to Pucón, but there is no need to linger here.
Transport out of the city is expedient and will get you to where you need to go. So don’t worry, just hop on your shuttle, into your rental car, or onto a bus and make your way beyond the hills of Puerto Montt and onto your next stop in Chile’s utterly stunning Lakes District and beyond.
We believe travel is more than ticking destinations off a list – it’s about discovering new places deeply, feeling connected wherever you go, and knowing you have a trusted team behind you every step of the way.
