Puerto Natales

Originally home to the Kawésqar (Alacaluf) and Aoniken (Tehuelche) peoples, the area later welcomed German, British, Croatian, Greek, Italian and Spanish immigrants, many of whom arrived from the Chiloé Archipelago to work in sheep breeding. Thin soils, strong winds and cold limit large‑scale horticulture, yet small gardens produce zucchini, cherry tomatoes, strawberries, cucumbers and carrots.

Torres del Paine National Park, designated a UNESCO World Biosphere Reserve, dominates the landscape with three granite spires: Central Tower at 2 800 m, South Tower at 2 850 m and North Tower at 2 248 m. The park contains the third‑largest ice field on the planet, hundreds of bird species and numerous mammals; it remains open year‑round, though October to April offers the longest daylight and the driest weather. Twenty‑four kilometres northwest, the Cueva del Milodón Natural Monument shelters a series of caves and the rock formation known as the Devil’s Chair; in 1895 explorers uncovered skin and bones of the extinct giant ground sloth Mylodon darwini. The monument lies within the broader context of Bernardo O’Higgins National Park and the Alacalufes National Reserve.

Cultural landmarks include the Hotel Lady Florence Dixie, named for the 19th‑century English traveler, and The Singular Patagonia, a luxury hotel housed in the restored Puerto Bories cold‑storage plant built in 1913 with Post‑Victorian industrial architecture. As the only city in the Última Esperanza province and the final passenger stop for the Navimag ferry, Puerto Natales serves as the practical starting line for Patagonia’s most remote wilderness.
