The basin that holds the city rises from about 400 meters in the west to over 700 meters in the east, creating a series of “island hills” such as Cerro Santa Lucía and Cerro San Cristóbal. From the summit of Santa Lucía, a visitor can walk past fortifications and enjoy views of the Mapocho River that threads the urban landscape. Santiago’s transport network includes Arturo Merino Benítez International Airport, a dense web of highways and one of Latin America’s most extensive metro systems, linking the high‑rise districts with residential neighborhoods that spill into the Andean foothills.
