Medellin

Medellin

The city’s system of cable‑car lines, which climbs from the downtown basin up into the steep hills that cradle the Aburrá Valley, defines Medellín’s modern silhouette. Medellín sits in the Antioquia department of western Colombia, framed by the Andes and the Río Medellín. With a population of about 2.5 million, it has evolved from a mid‑20th‑century industrial centre into a hub of urban innovation.

The historic centre revolves around Plaza Botero, where twelve oversized bronze figures by Fernando Botero sit beside the neoclassical façade of the former City Hall, now the Museo de Antioquia, a designated National Monument. Across the square, the modern glass dome of Parque Explora houses an aquarium and interactive science exhibits, while the adjacent Jardín Botánico displays a collection of orchids beneath a towering orchid‑shaped pavilion. The Metrocable’s Line L reaches the hillside community of Santo Domingo, where the open‑air market offers fresh fruit and the street‑level murals of Comuna 13 narrate the district’s recent transformation.

East of the city, the cable‑car continues to Parque Arví, a 16 000‑hectare ecological reserve that preserves cloud‑forest ecosystems and provides guided hikes to waterfalls and pre‑columbian archaeological sites. In the upscale El Poblado district, Avenida La Calle hosts boutique cafés and restaurants where bandeja paisa, a platter of beans, pork, plantain and avocado, is served on large ceramic plates. Every August, the Feria de las Flores fills the streets with flower‑laden floats, marching bands and the scent of roses that bloom on the surrounding slopes.

The integration of cable‑car routes into daily life, allowing commuters to travel more than 800 metres in elevation within minutes, remains the most visible testament to Medellín’s ongoing urban renewal.
