Travel beyond Santa Marta and spend a day discovering the cultural traditions, spiritual beliefs, and spectacular natural surroundings of the Sierra Nevada.
Your experience begins with pickup from your hotel in Santa Marta, followed by an approximately 1.5-hour drive through the lush landscapes surrounding the Sierra Nevada. Upon arrival at Katanzama, you will be welcomed into an Arhuaco Indigenous community, where a local community leader will introduce you to their way of life, traditions, and connection with the natural world.
During your visit, you will learn about the community's ancestral beliefs and visit meaningful places such as their ceremonial house and sacred tree, gaining insight into the spiritual relationship the Arhuaco people maintain with their territory. A walk along the nearby beach provides another opportunity to appreciate the beautiful natural environment that surrounds the community.
After the cultural experience, continue toward the Don Diego River, where you will enjoy a traditional lunch before beginning the second part of the adventure.
Using an inflatable tube, you will gently float downstream surrounded by tropical vegetation and the landscapes of the Sierra Nevada. The journey leads toward the mouth of the Don Diego River, where its fresh waters meet the Caribbean Sea.
There will be time to relax and enjoy the beach before boarding a boat for the journey back upstream. From there, your vehicle will be waiting to take you back to Santa Marta.
The complete experience lasts approximately 8 hours.
What to Bring
Comfortable lightweight clothing suitable for warm weather, comfortable walking shoes or sandals, swimsuit, sunscreen, hat or cap, insect repellent, reusable water bottle, towel, and a change of clothes for after the tubing activity. We also recommend bringing a small amount of cash for personal expenses and a waterproof bag or case for your phone and other personal items.What's included

This experience requires a minimum of 4 participants to operate. If the minimum number is not reached, alternative arrangements may be offered. Please be ready in your hotel lobby at least 10 minutes before the scheduled pickup time. The experience combines cultural activities, walking, river tubing, boat transportation, and time at the beach. Participants should be comfortable entering and exiting the river and boat and spending time outdoors in a tropical climate. Please respect the traditions, sacred spaces, instructions, and photography guidelines established by the Arhuaco community during your visit.
