Santa Marta

The historic centre, a UNESCO‑listed Biosphere Reserve, preserves a grid of 16th‑century plazas, the 17th‑century Cathedral of Santa Marta, and the Quinta de San Pedro Alejandrino where Simón Bolívar spent his final days. A short walk east leads to the fortified wall of the old city gate, while the adjacent Parque de los Novios offers shade‑dappled avenues lined with bougainvillea. Beyond the city limits, the Sierra Nevada rises sharply, its cloud forests protecting endemic species and feeding the turquoise waters of nearby Tayrona National Natural Park, a protected area renowned for coral reefs and pre‑Columbian ruins.

Along the shoreline, the Rodadero district provides a long, sandy beach backed by palm‑fringed hotels and a promenade of seafood stalls. The fishing village of Taganga, a few kilometres north, retains a narrow, cobbled main street where local divers launch boats for reef excursions. Inland, the town of Minca sits at 650 metres elevation, offering coffee‑plantation tours and a viewpoint over the valley. Typical dishes include ceviche made with freshly caught shrimp, arepa de huevo fried in plantain oil, and patacón served with hogao sauce. Each July, the city hosts the Festival del Mar, a parade of traditional boats and music that draws participants from the entire Caribbean coast.

The juxtaposition of snow‑capped mountains rising directly behind a turquoise shoreline creates one of the most photographed silhouettes in Colombia, a view that defines Santa Marta’s unique character.
