The Spanish founded Santa Marta in 1525, making it the oldest European town in South America. Santa Marta doesn’t have the biggest draw for tourists, but it’s a nice place to stay while you explore some of the surrounding attractions.

You can orient yourself from the Parque de los Novios, which is in the center of the city. This is a popular gathering place for young and old alike, although it takes its name (“novios” means lovers) from its reputation as a hotspot for dates. The beach here isn’t the prettiest in the area by a long shot, but Bastidas Boardwalk is the place to go for people watching.
Take a short bus ride to Tacanga, a small seaside village, and a hotspot for snorkeling and scuba diving. It’s about a 30-minute drive to Tayrona National Park which has glittering, white sand and turquoise beaches surrounded by jungle. Swimming conditions aren’t always ideal, but it’s worth a visit for a scenic hike.
