The ocean around Iceland is dangerously cold year-round, with strong currents and sneaker waves that can knock people off their feet. The black sand beaches at Vik are particularly notorious for powerful waves that surge up the beach without warning. Never turn your back on the ocean and keep a safe distance from the waterline.
