What Is Iceland's Currency?

Iceland's currency is the Icelandic krona (ISK). While you will see prices quoted in krona, credit and debit cards are accepted almost universally, even for small purchases in remote areas.

Most travelers never need to handle cash in Iceland. Credit cards work at gas stations, restaurants, museums, and even some unmanned toll booths and parking areas. Visa and Mastercard are most widely accepted, with American Express available at larger establishments.

If you do need cash, ATMs are available in Reykjavik, Akureyri, and most towns. Avoid exchanging currency at airports or hotels, which typically offer poor rates. Drawing krona directly from an ATM usually provides better value.

One quirk of Icelandic card payments: many automated kiosks require a PIN, not a signature. Ensure your card has a working PIN before you travel, or you may have trouble at unmanned gas pumps and parking machines.
