Cascais
Since the 1870s Cascais has functioned as a royal seaside resort, attracting European monarchs and later the world of high‑stakes sailing. The town lies on Portugal’s Estoril Coast within the Lisbon District. Its marina hosts events such as the America’s Cup, while the neighboring district of Estoril welcomes conferences like the Horasis Global Meeting. With more than 214,000 residents, Cascais combines historic depth with a reputation for affluent living.
More about Cascais
Cascais occupies 97.40 km² at the mouth of the Tagus estuary, its shoreline marked by a modern marina and the traditional fishing harbour that once supplied Lisbon. The landscape includes the Caves of Poço Velho, natural grottoes used since the Neolithic, and the coastal cliffs that frame the town’s promenade. Nearby Estoril forms part of the same municipality, sharing the same coastal stretch.
The town’s built heritage stretches from the 14th‑century Castle of Cascais, granted by King Ferdinand to a local lord, to the early‑16th‑century Mother Church of Nossa Senhora da Assunção. Roman presence is visible in the villae of Freiria and Casais Velhos, and in a row of ten fish‑salting tanks uncovered on Rua Marques Leal Pancada. Visigothic and Muslim layers survive in the Cemetery of Alcoitão and in place names such as Alcoitão and Alcabideche. A small fortress erected by King John II in 1488 still marks the original defensive line at the sea.
The Casino Estoril, famous for inspiring Ian Fleming’s first James Bond novel Casino Royale, adds a literary footnote to the town’s profile. Former residents have included King Edward VIII of the United Kingdom, King Juan Carlos I of Spain, King Umberto II of Italy, and Cuban president Fulgencio Batista. Today the municipality ranks among the wealthiest in Portugal and the Iberian Peninsula, with one of the most expensive real‑estate markets and a consistently high quality of life. The enduring link between royalty, sailing and literary intrigue makes Cascais a uniquely layered destination.
