Ensenada

Ensenada’s waterfront is framed by the historic Faro de Ensenada, its lantern still flashing every ten seconds, and by the wooden pier that leads to the “Plaza del Mar,” where a bronze statue of a lone fisherman watches the waves. A short walk inland reaches the Church of San Juan, a 19th‑century wooden chapel listed as a National Monument and noted for its hand‑painted altar. The nearby “Museo de la Pesca” occupies a former warehouse and displays vintage nets, a 1930s trawler’s wheel, and photographs of the town’s role in the early 20th‑century salmon boom.

Visitors can join a “curanto” cooking demonstration on the beach, where seafood, pork, potatoes and chuño are layered in a pit, covered with nalca leaves and earth, then slow‑cooked for hours. In February the town hosts the Fiesta del Mar, a three‑day celebration featuring traditional cueca dances, sea‑shanty choirs and a boat parade that lights the harbor at night. The most striking aspect of Ensenada remains its lighthouse, a solitary sentinel that links the town’s maritime heritage to the endless horizon of the Pacific.
