San Andres

The island’s geography is a low‑lying limestone platform surrounded by a barrier reef that shelters mangroves, sandbars and the famous natural aquarium at La Piscinita. Visitors stroll along the palm‑lined promenade of Calle del Mar, pause at the 19th‑century lighthouse that still guides fishing boats, and explore the limestone cavern known as Cueva de Morgan, a pirate legend tied to the 17th‑century raids of Henry Morgan. The Casa Museo Isleña preserves Creole furniture, photographs and the original wooden church of Ermita del Carmen, offering a glimpse of the island’s mixed heritage.

Seafood lovers sample rondón, a stew of lobster, fish, plantains and coconut milk, while street stalls serve freshly pressed coconut water and patacones fried in the same oil. The February carnival fills San Andrés with brass bands, traditional dance troupes and the “carnaval de negros” parade that celebrates the island’s African roots. The ability to snorkel directly from the shore at El Acuario, where dozens of tropical fish dart among coral heads, remains the most distinctive experience on San Andrés.
