Akureyri

Akureyri

Akureyri sits at the inland end of the fjord Eyjafjörður, framed by steep mountains that shelter its ice‑free harbour. The town lies in northern Iceland and carries the nickname “Capital of North Iceland,” serving as the country’s largest settlement outside the Capital Region. With a municipal charter granted in 1786, it has grown from a 9th‑century Viking settlement into a key port and fishing centre.

The town’s geography is dominated by the surrounding peaks, the highest being Strýta at 1,451 m to the west and Kerling at 1,538 m to the southwest. A narrow coastal strip gives way to the reclaimed land of Oddeyri, the largest spit formed by the Glerá river, while the calm waters of Pollurinn provide a natural harbour protected from strong winds. Akureyri’s centre revolves around Town Hall Square on the northwest corner of Pollurinn, and its districts include the historic Innbær strip between the hill and the harbour, the hilltop Brekkan, the Oddeyri peninsula, and Glerárhverfi on the north bank of the Glerá, locally called Þorpið.

Remnants of its wartime role appear in the former base of the Norwegian‑British No. 330 Squadron, which operated bombers and Catalina flying boats from the town during World War II. The childhood home of author Jón Sveinsson has been converted into a museum, and the University of Akureyri, founded in 1987, adds an academic dimension to the community. Since 2004 the municipality also encompasses Hrísey, the second‑largest island off Iceland, known for pet and livestock quarantine and a small fishing‑processing settlement.

Akureyri’s combination of a protected natural harbour, towering mountains and a legacy of trade and aviation makes it a uniquely accessible gateway to Iceland’s north.
