Höfn
Höfn frames the horizon with views of Vatnajökull, Europe’s largest ice cap by volume, creating a striking backdrop for the fishing town. Situated on a peninsula in the southeast of Iceland, the settlement lies at the head of Hornafjörður fjord and serves as the second‑largest community in the region. Founded in 1897, the town grew around a natural harbour that gives the place its name.
The town’s coastline wraps around three sides, offering long beaches, shifting lagoons and sand reefs formed by glacial rivers. Small islands lie just east of the harbour; the largest, Mikley, is followed by Krókalátur and Hellir. From the nearby headland Ingólfshöfði, which rises 76 metres, visitors can watch skuas, guillemots, fulmars and puffins. The 255‑metre Hornafjarðarbrú bridge, completed in 1961, was the second largest bridge in Iceland at that time and still links the town to surrounding districts such as Suðursveit and Nes.
Cultural life centres on the annual Humarhátíð lobster festival held the first weekend of July, while the summer Glacier Exhibition occupies an old supermarket building. Religious architecture includes Hafnarkirkja, a modern Protestant church for 200 people inaugurated in 1966, and a small Roman Catholic church opened in 2013. Museums comprise the Vatnajökull National Park exhibition housed in Gamlabúð, an historic building that now functions as an information centre after being relocated with the Cultural Heritage Agency’s approval, and the Listasafn Svavars Guðnasonar art museum opened in the town hall in 2011.
Höfn experiences a borderline subarctic climate, with summer daytime highs near 12 °C and winter temperatures just above freezing; precipitation averages about 1,450 mm, falling on roughly half the days of the year. The town’s most memorable feature is the combination of dramatic glacier scenery and a summer lobster festival that draws visitors to its harbour each July.
