Vik
The black sand of Reynisfjara, flecked with glittering basalt shards, defines the coastline of Vik, a fishing village on Iceland’s south shore. Vik lies at the foot of the Mýrdalsjökull glacier, about 180 km east of Reykjavík, and its roughly 1,200 residents sustain a modest service economy centered on tourism and fisheries. The village’s name, meaning “bay,” reflects its sheltered position between towering cliffs and the open Atlantic.
The beach stretches for two kilometres, its fine volcanic sand formed from ash that solidified into glassy grains. Rising from the surf, the Reynisdrangar sea stacks stand three to five metres wide and rise up to 70 metres, their silhouettes a frequent subject of local legend. Just west, the Dyrhólaey peninsula offers a natural arch cut through a 120‑metre‑high cliff, and a bird‑watching platform where puffins nest each summer. The 19th‑century Vik Church, painted white and perched on a hill, provides a panoramic view of the black beach, the glacier, and the distant volcano Katla, which lies beneath the ice cap.
Cultural sites include the modest Vik i Mýrdal Museum, displaying photographs of early 20th‑century fishing life, and a small art gallery that showcases works inspired by the surrounding lava fields. Guided hikes onto Mýrdalsjökull allow visitors to explore ice caves, while local eateries serve fresh Arctic char, langoustine, and lamb stew seasoned with wild herbs. Each autumn, the community hosts a modest music gathering in the town hall, featuring folk tunes and contemporary Icelandic bands.
Reynisfjara’s black sand, formed from volcanic ash that has turned to glass, remains the most distinctive natural feature that draws travelers to Vik, Iceland.
