Flights from Reykjavik's domestic airport (RKV) to Akureyri take about 45 minutes, compared to a 5-6 hour drive. This makes northern Iceland much more accessible for travelers with limited time. Akureyri serves as a base for exploring Lake Myvatn, Husavik, and the Diamond Circle.
The Westfjords, Iceland's most remote region, are accessible via flights to Isafjordur. The drive from Reykjavik takes 6-7 hours through winding mountain roads, while a flight takes under an hour.
Flights also serve the Westman Islands (Vestmannaeyjar), offering a quick alternative to the ferry from the mainland. Smaller airstrips in Egilsstadir (East Fjords), Hofn, and a few other locations occasionally receive scheduled or charter service.
Domestic flights are reasonably priced and book up during peak summer months, so reserve in advance if flights are part of your plan.
