Positano

Positano

The cascade of pastel‑colored houses clinging to sheer limestone cliffs defines Positano, a town on Italy’s Amalfi Coast that drops toward the Tyrrhenian Sea. Built on the slopes of the Lattari Mountains, the settlement presents a “vertical village” of narrow stairways linking terraced homes, olive trees and lemon groves. With 3,678 residents, it has evolved from a Roman‑era fishing hamlet into a worldwide holiday destination.

Positano’s geography forces the town to rise quickly from sea level to more than 400 metres, limiting expansion but creating dramatic views of the coastline. The main shoreline is formed by coves such as Spiaggia Grande, the most recognized beach in the town, and Fornillo, the second largest beach, both reachable on foot or by boat. Smaller coves—La Porta, Fiumicello, Arienzo, San Pietro, Laurito and Remmese—offer additional swimming spots. The climate remains mild; winter lows rarely fall below 6 °C, while long, warm summers are tempered by sea breezes.

At the heart of the town stands the church of Santa Maria Assunta, its dome tiled in bright majolica and its interior housing a thirteenth‑century Byzantine icon of a black Madonna, said to have been rescued from a storm‑tossed pirate ship. Below the cliff, the Roman Archaeological Museum (MAR Positano) opened on 18 July 2018; its underground complex contains two crypts and a frescoed room from the imperial era, the only surviving wall painting of a Roman villa on the Amalfi Coast. The annual Cartoons on the Bay festival brings the Pulcinella Awards to the harbor, where a small stall sells the locally produced limoncello and the exclusive “L.Albertissimo” spirit.

The town’s steep, stair‑filled layout and its cliff‑side cascade of homes remain the most striking reminder of Positano’s unique blend of natural drama and centuries‑old culture.
