Taormina

Taormina

Perched on a cliff above the Ionian Sea, Taormina frames its ancient Greek theatre with sweeping ocean views. The town lies on Sicily’s east coast in the Metropolitan City of Messina, Italy, and has welcomed visitors since the nineteenth century. Its steep hilltop rises about 250 metres above the water, while a rock crowned by a Norman castle tops the ridge another 150 metres higher.

The historic centre occupies the ancient citadel, where fragments of reservoirs, tessellated pavements and a mysterious Naumachia still surface among the ruins. The Roman‑Greek theatre, enlarged in the second century to a diameter of 109 metres, ranks as the second largest in Sicily and retains an unusually intact proscenium wall; operatic and theatrical productions continue under its vaulted arches. Overlooking the bay, the Saracen Castle sits 400 metres above sea level, and the nearby Arab necropolis, built between the ninth and eleventh centuries, presents symmetrical burial cells. Within the town, the 12th‑14th‑century Palazzo Corvaja, the 13th‑century cathedral, a 1635 Baroque fountain, the Gothic Palazzo Duchi di Santo Stefano, the Church of San Domenico, the Anglican Church of Saint George and the municipal gardens of Villa Comunale offer a layered architectural walk. A stair‑climbed path, Salita Castello, leads to the Santuario Madonna della Rocca, where a panoramic outlook captures both the coastline and Mount Etna, a short 45‑minute drive away.

Taormina’s beaches, including the nature‑reserve Isola Bella, are reachable by a 1992 aerial tramway, while tours of the Capo Sant’Andrea grottos add a coastal adventure. The town’s reputation as a haven for artists and gay men in the early twentieth century attracted figures such as Greta Garbo, Marlene Dietrich and Elizabeth Taylor, and its streets still echo that cultural legacy. Today, the ancient theatre’s sea‑framed stage remains the most distinctive feature, drawing audiences to performances that blend history with the surrounding landscape.
