Barcelona

Barcelona's skyline is defined by the surreal forms of Antoni Gaudí and the modernist works of Lluís Domènech i Montaner, both UNESCO World Heritage Sites. The city sits on Spain's northeastern Mediterranean coast between the Llobregat and Besòs rivers, backed by the Serra de Collserola range. Within its limits about 1.7 million people live, forming part of a 5.7 million‑strong metropolitan area.

Barcelona's natural harbour makes the Port of Barcelona one of Europe’s principal seaports and the continent’s busiest passenger hub, while Barcelona–El Prat Airport handles over fifty million travelers annually. A dense motorway network links the city to France and the wider European system, reinforcing its role as a transport crossroads.

The urban fabric layers Roman foundations, a medieval Gothic Quarter that once served as the capital of the County of Barcelona, and the Modernisme legacy of Gaudí’s Sagrada Família, Park Güell and Casa Milà beside Domènech i Montaner’s Hospital de Sant Pau. Barcelona hosts the University of Barcelona and Pompeu Fabra University and houses the Union for the Mediterranean headquarters. The 1992 Summer Olympics spurred extensive regeneration, leaving venues such as the Olympic Stadium and a revitalised waterfront promenade.

The climate follows a hot‑summer Mediterranean pattern, with mild winters, warm to hot summers and most rainfall in autumn and spring, while summer remains dry for about three months. In July 2023 Barcelona was named UNESCO‑UIA World Capital of Architecture for 2024–2026, positioning it as a global forum for heritage and urban planning. From its Roman roots to its current role as an internationally recognised architectural capital, the city continuously intertwines built form with everyday life.
