Paros
Paros is the Cycladic island whose white marble has been sculpted into the statues of antiquity, a legacy that still shapes its identity. The island sits in the central Aegean Sea, between Mykonos and Naxos, and belongs to Greece. With a resident population of roughly 13,000, it balances a quiet village rhythm with a steady flow of visitors drawn to its clear waters and historic towns.
More about Paros
The landscape alternates between rolling limestone hills and a coastline punctuated by coves. Golden Beach on the east side offers a long stretch of fine sand that attracts windsurfers from across Europe, while the sculpted granite formations at Kolymbithres create natural swimming lagoons. Inland, the village of Lefkes climbs the island’s spine, its narrow alleys framed by stone houses and a 19th‑century windmill that overlooks the valley below. The harbor of Naoussa, protected by a small Venetian fort, fills with fishing boats and pastel‑colored cafés, providing a lively backdrop for evening strolls.
Parikia, the main town, greets visitors with the 4th‑century Church of Panagia Ekatontapiliani, a protected Byzantine monument whose name means “one hundred doors.” Adjacent to the church, the Venetian Kastro rises on a rocky promontory, its walls offering panoramic views of the harbor. The Archaeological Museum of Paros displays marble figurines and pottery that trace the island’s Cycladic roots, while the nearby marble quarries at Marathi continue to supply raw stone to workshops in Athens. Seasonal events such as the August Paros Festival showcase traditional music and dance, and local tavernas serve revithada, a slow‑cooked chickpea stew, alongside kopanisti cheese and fresh gouna.
The island’s centuries‑old marble quarries, still active today, give Paros a tangible link to the ancient world that few places can match.
