The city hosted the Summer Olympics and Paralympics in 1964 and again in 2021, and it was the venue for three G7 summits.
The climate is humid subtropical, with August averaging 26.9 °C and January 5.4 °C; record temperatures range from –9.2 °C in 1876 to 39.5 °C in 2004. Annual rainfall approaches 1,600 mm, and typhoons visit each year. Among its many attributes, the daily flow of passengers through Shinjuku Station, the world’s busiest train station, epitomises the relentless pace that defines Tokyo, Japan.
