Cabo Pulmo
The reef at Cabo Pulmo is the oldest of only three coral reefs on the west coast of North America, and it lies on the east side of the Baja California Peninsula about 100 kilometres north of Cabo San Lucas in Mexico. Designated a national marine park, the area protects a 71.11‑square‑kilometre (27.46 sq mi) stretch of water that includes the Gulf of California’s northernmost coral formation.
Hard coral colonies cling to rock outcrops that run parallel to the shoreline, extending into progressively deeper water offshore. Eleven species of coral create a mosaic of bright structures that support a diverse fish community, offering snorkellers and divers a view of vibrant underwater architecture. The reef’s age is estimated at 20,000 years, a timeline that underscores its rarity in the eastern Pacific Ocean.
Local fishermen organized into community groups in the mid‑1990s, prompting the federal government to declare the zone a protected National Marine Park in 1995. Subsequent recognitions include UNESCO World Heritage status in 2005 as part of the Islands and Protected Areas of the Gulf of California, and Ramsar Wetland of International Importance in 2008. Non‑profit groups such as Patronato Cabo del Este, Amigos para la Conservación de Cabo Pulmo, and the collective Cabo Pulmo Vivo have continued to guide stewardship, turning the park into a model for marine governance. Since 2019 the site appears on the World Heritage in Danger list because of the threatened vaquita porpoise, highlighting the ongoing balance between conservation and ecological pressure. The 20,000‑year‑old reef, safeguarded by community‑driven management, remains the sole living reminder of a coral ecosystem that once extended along the western Pacific shoreline.
