Guanajuato

A network of underground streets and steep stairways winds through a valley of pink sandstone, giving Guanajuato its unmistakable maze‑like character. The city serves as the capital of the state of Guanajuato in central Mexico and sits within the Bajío macroregion. Its historic centre and the adjacent mines earned UNESCO World Heritage status in 1988, recognizing the town’s colonial architecture and its role in global silver production. Visitors often note the contrast between the narrow alleys that exclude cars and the broad plazas that open onto colorful façades.

More about Guanajuato

The urban fabric follows the contours of a narrow valley, so many thoroughfares disappear beneath the surface while others climb the surrounding hills on long staircases. Buildings of pink or green sandstone line the plazas, and the climate shifts from a temperate average of 18.5 °C to summer highs of 36 °C in the southern part of the municipality. Most rain falls during the monsoon months of June to September, adding a seasonal rhythm to the streets.

Key sites include the Valenciana Mine, which once supplied two‑thirds of the world’s silver, and the Alhóndiga de Granaditas, the location of the first battle of the Mexican War of Independence. The Mummy Museum displays naturally mummified bodies recovered from the municipal cemetery between the mid‑19th and 20th centuries. Each February, the Festival Internacional Cervantino draws performers from across Mexico and abroad, turning the historic centre into a stage for music, theatre and dance. The city’s identity remains anchored in the silver that once flowed from its mines, a legacy that continues to shape its streets and cultural life.
