Xilitla - Huasteca Potosina
A network ofconcrete sculptures, mushroom‑shaped towers and hidden waterfalls rises from the mist‑cloaked cloud forest of Xilitla, the surreal garden known as Las Pozas. Xilitla is a small town in the Huasteca Potosina region of the state of San Luis Potosí, Mexico, perched on the eastern slopes of the Sierra Madre Oriental. With fewer than ten thousand residents, it serves as a gateway to a landscape of limestone cliffs, river canyons and tropical rain‑forest that stretches toward the Gulf coast.
More about Xilitla - Huasteca Potosina
The town’s centre clusters around a 16th‑century parish church built of pink stone, its bell tower visible from the surrounding hills. A short walk leads to the Museum of Huastec Culture, where pre‑Columbian pottery and textiles illustrate the traditions of the indigenous Huastec people. Every March the streets fill with the Festival de la Huasteca, a parade of folkloric dancers, marimba bands and stalls offering zacahuil—a massive tamale baked in a pit—and fresh river fish seasoned with local herbs.
Beyond the urban core, the cloud forest invites hikers to follow trails that wind past cascading streams such as the Cascada de Tamul, a 105‑meter drop that plunges into the turquoise Río Tampaón. Guided boat trips navigate the river’s serpentine bends, offering close views of towering limestone formations. The centerpiece of the area, Las Pozas, was created in the 1940s by British surrealist patron Edward James; he transformed the forest floor into a series of concrete pavilions, stairways and pools that integrate seamlessly with natural waterfalls and ancient trees. The garden’s blend of avant‑garde architecture and untouched ecology remains the most distinctive feature of Xilitla, drawing visitors who seek a place where art and jungle coexist.
