Inside, visitors walk past a series of glass‑enclosed plots that replicate traditional chinampa beds, each planted with maize, squash, and amaranth arranged exactly as they would have been by Aztec farmers. Interactive panels explain how the artificial islands are built from lake mud, reeds and compost, while a guided tour shows a small irrigation channel where water is manually diverted to demonstrate the ancient hydraulic system. A rooftop garden displays modern adaptations, including hydroponic lettuce grown alongside heirloom varieties, and a nearby kitchen serves dishes prepared from the on‑site harvest.
The museum’s programming includes workshops on reed weaving, seasonal festivals that reenact pre‑colonial planting rituals, and collaborations with local schools that maintain a permanent plot for educational purposes. Because Xochimilco’s chinampas are listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the centre’s efforts are protected under international heritage guidelines. The reconstructed 1,200‑square‑metre chinampa that supplies the museum’s kitchen illustrates how an agricultural technique invented over 2,500 years ago still moves the city’s food system.
