Comitan Dominguez
Every Marchthe town square of Comitán de Domínguez erupts in the rhythm of marimba bands and the aroma of roasted corn, heralding the Festival de la Primavera that has animated the community for more than a century. Comitán is a municipal city in the highlands of Chiapas, Mexico, perched at roughly 1,600 metres above sea level and framed by the Sierra Madre de Chiapas. With a population of about 170 000, it serves as a gateway to both colonial heritage and the adjacent rainforest.
More about Comitan Dominguez
The historic centre revolves around the Plaza de Armas, where the 16th‑century Parroquia de San Juan Bautista rises with its baroque façade and twin bell towers; the church is listed as a national historic monument by the Instituto Nacional de Antropología e Historia. Across the square, the former convent now houses the Museo de la Ciudad, displaying photographs of the city’s evolution, while the adjacent Mundo Maya museum presents ceramic shards and stone carvings recovered from nearby Maya sites such as El Chal. Narrow streets named Calle Real and Calle del Sol lead to the Mercado de los Artesanos, where hand‑woven textiles dyed with indigo and natural pigments are sold alongside fresh chiles and local cheese.
Beyond the urban core, the Cañón del Río La Pila offers a series of waterfalls that can be reached via a short hike, and the Montebello Lakes National Park lies a half‑hour’s drive to the east, providing opportunities for kayaking on turquoise lagoons framed by pine‑covered hills. Coffee plantations on the outskirts invite tours that explain the region’s shade‑grown cultivation methods, and evenings often feature the traditional dish tamal de chipilín, a leaf‑wrapped masa parcel filled with herbs and pork.
The coexistence of colonial stonework, active Maya cultural expressions, and the surrounding highland landscape gives Comitán de Domínguez a rare depth that continues to attract scholars, hikers, and food lovers alike.
