Visitors can walk through the Turtle Center, where hatchlings are raised and released, and learn about the dramatic rebound of nesting activity—from 60 000 nests in 1988 to nearly 700 000 in 1995. Nearby, the cooperative Cosméticos Naturales de Mazunte produces skin‑care products from locally sourced ingredients, a venture sparked by a 1993 visit from Anita Roddick of The Body Shop.

Annual celebrations give the town a cultural pulse. The Spring Equinox Festival, the International Dance Festival, and the Jazz Encounter draw performers and audiences from across Oaxaca, reinforcing Mazunte’s identity as a peasant ecological economic reserve that has shifted from turtle hunting to ecotourism. The town’s recovery after Hurricane Carlotta in 2012 underscores its resilience, while the ever‑increasing turtle nests remain the most vivid reminder of Mazunte’s unique relationship with the sea.
