Palenque

The Temple ofthe Inscriptions, whose towering stone slab hides the tomb of the 7th‑century ruler Pacal the Great, dominates the Palenque ruins. Palenque is a Maya city‑state in southern Mexico, situated near the Usumacinta River in the state of Chiapas and adjacent to the modern town of Palenque. The site lies about 130 km south of Ciudad del Carmen, at roughly 150 m above sea level, and experiences a humid climate with an average temperature of 26 °C and around 2,160 mm of rain each year. By 2005 archaeologists had uncovered an area of 2.5 km², yet less than one‑tenth of the ancient city remains explored, leaving more than a thousand structures still cloaked by jungle; the site attracted 920,470 visitors in 2017.

More about Palenque

Among the most celebrated structures are the Temple of the Inscriptions, the Temple of the Skull with its macabre pillar carving, and Temple XIII, which yielded the Tomb of the Red Queen, a noblewoman whose sarcophagus was coated in bright red cinnabar powder. A short walk south of the main plaza reveals the Temple of the Jaguar, named for a bas‑relief of a king seated on a jaguar‑shaped throne, while Structure XII displays a carving of the God of Death. The Temple of the Count bears the name of early explorer Jean‑Frédéric Waldeck, who once inhabited the building. A stone bridge spans the Otulum River below the Aqueduct, and a nearby court hosts a traditional Mesoamerican ballgame.

The site’s extensive hieroglyphic corpus, recorded on monuments during the reigns of Pacal, his son Kʼinich Kan Bahlam II, and grandson Kʼinich Akal Moʼ Naabʼ, has allowed scholars to reconstruct a detailed dynastic list and to study Classic Maya mythology. Fossils embedded in the limestone used for the temples document early Paleocene marine life, linking the ruins to a broader natural history. The convergence of a royal tomb, dense hieroglyphic narrative and untouched jungle makes Palenque a singular window onto Classic Maya civilization.
