Tequila

The surrounding highlands rest at an altitude of 1 500 m, where volcanic soil and a dry climate nurture the blue agave that fuels the town’s industry. The National Museum of Tequila, housed in a former hacienda, displays copper stills, historic photographs, and a map of the Ruta del Tequila that links the town to nearby estates such as Hacienda San José del Refugio and the Casa Herradura distillery. Guided tours lead through agave fields, past stone‑cut mills called “tahonas,” and into tasting rooms where visitors sample joven, reposado, and añejo expressions of the spirit.

Annual celebrations peak during the Feria Nacional del Tequila in November, when streets fill with music, traditional dances, and competitions for the best agave harvest. Local eateries serve birria, pozole, and sweet pastries flavored with a splash of tequila, offering a culinary echo of the town’s heritage.
