Tuxtla Gutierrez
A sheer limestone wall that drops more than 1,000 metres into the Grijalva River defines the skyline of Tuxtla Gutierrez. The city serves as the capital of Chiapas in southern Mexico, and its streets wind through a highland valley where the humid climate nurtures coffee plantations and tropical foliage. With a population of roughly 600 000, it functions as the administrative and cultural hub of the state.
More about Tuxtla Gutierrez
The Sumidero Canyon, a national park protected since 1936, looms just south of the urban core; boat operators launch from a dock near the city’s main plaza, threading narrow channels between cliffs that rise like stone sentinels. Inside the park, visitors can spot spider monkeys leaping across the canyon walls and watch the river’s currents carve a misty veil over the water. The city’s own geography rests on a basin of volcanic soils, giving the surrounding hills a deep green hue that contrasts with the gray of the canyon.
Historic landmarks cluster around the central square. The Cathedral of San Marcos, begun in the 16th century and completed in the 19th, displays a façade of pink stone and a bell tower that dominates the skyline. Adjacent, the Parque de la Marimba offers daily performances where local musicians play the traditional wooden instrument, creating a rhythm that drifts through nearby cafés. The Museum of the Archaeology and History of Chiapas houses artifacts from the Maya and pre‑colonial societies, while the Zoológico Miguel Álvarez del Toro preserves native species such as jaguar, tapir, and the endemic quetzal.
Evening stalls in the Mercado de los Vendedores serve tamales wrapped in chipilín leaves and coffee brewed from beans grown on the slopes that overlook the city. The combination of towering canyon walls, live marimba music, and a market that celebrates regional flavors makes Tuxtla Gutierrez a place where natural grandeur and cultural tradition intersect in a single, unforgettable landscape.
