Valle de Bravo
Lake Avándaro, formed when a series of dams flooded 2,900 hectares in the 1940s, dominates the landscape of Valle de Bravo, a town in the State of Mexico. The town sits on a small plateau at the lake’s edge, about 156 km southwest of Mexico City, making it a frequent weekend destination for the capital’s affluent travelers. Its name combines the original “El Valle” with an honorific for Nicolás Bravo, a hero of the Mexican‑American War.
More about Valle de Bravo
The reservoir, created by the Villa Victoria Dam and later complemented by the Valle, Tilostoc, Colorines, Ixtapantongo and Santo Tomás de los Plátanos dams, supplies water to Mexico City and powers a hydroelectric plant that generates 458,775 kilowatts. The lake’s shoreline hosts exclusive resorts, golf clubs, sailing schools and a variety of restaurants. The town’s historic core rises around a Franciscan convent founded between 1607 and 1615, and the Parish of Saint Francis of Asisi still preserves a 17th‑century baptismal font, a holy‑water font and a carving of Saint Francis set in a vaulted niche. The third nave, built with community participation in the 1950s, was completed in 1994. Nearby, the Temple of Santa María Ahuacatlán, begun as a chapel in 1864, houses a Black Christ and large canvases by the English artist Phillippa that link Mazahua legend to the sacred image.
Cultural life centers on the Casa de la Cultura, positioned opposite the municipal dock, where workshops in aerobics, music, painting and natural medicine share space with a library, ballroom, café and exhibition rooms, including the studio of painter Ismael Ramos. The Joaquín Arcadio Pagaza Museum conserves the region’s cultural history, while the memory of the 1971 Festival de rock y ruedas—sometimes called the Mexican Woodstock—remains vivid, having drawn up to three hundred thousand participants to the hamlet of Tenantongo. This blend of engineered lake, historic architecture and a legacy of large‑scale music gatherings defines Valle de Bravo’s unique appeal.
