Zipolite
Mexico’sfirst and only legal public nude beach defines Zipolite, a coastal community on Oaxaca’s southern shoreline. The settlement lies in the San Pedro Pochutla municipality between Huatulco and Puerto Escondido, and locals call the stretch “Beach of the Dead” because its strong currents claim roughly fifty lives each year. Despite the danger, the beach draws travelers who appreciate its relaxed atmosphere and open‑air freedom.
More about Zipolite
The sand at Playa Zipolite rests on a site where archaeological finds hint at a long pre‑modern presence, though for much of the twentieth century a single family lived there as a modest fishing village. In the 1960s and 1970s counter‑culture hippies arrived, attracted by the isolation and the lack of law enforcement; the area earned a reputation as a free‑love haven and retained much of that hippie spirit into the present. Today the shoreline is lined with rustic cabins, palm‑thatched palapas, and basic concrete hotels that provide simple amenities for backpackers and other visitors.
Behind the beachfront row, the neighborhood known as Colonia Roca Blanca houses a street informally called the Adoquin, which functions as the town’s informal center. Recent municipal efforts have added tourist information desks and police patrols that operate day and night during the busy season, improving safety without erasing the laid‑back vibe.
Zipolite’s history includes three major hurricanes—Pauline and Rick in 1997 and Agatha in May 2022—as well as a destructive fire in February 2001 that consumed many wooden structures. The community has rebuilt repeatedly, preserving the beach’s unique status as Mexico’s only sanctioned public nudist spot while reminding visitors of the powerful currents that earned it its ominous nickname.
