Today Rome welcomes millions of visitors; in 2019 it ranked as the 14th most visited city worldwide with 8.6 million tourists. The city hosts United Nations agencies such as the Food and Agriculture Organization, houses the EUR business district with the Palazzo della Civiltà Italiana, and supports the Cinecittà film studios that have produced numerous award‑winning movies. The coexistence of Vatican City, the smallest independent state, entirely surrounded by Rome’s streets, makes the capital a singular blend of ancient empire and living papal sovereignty.
