Peloponnese
A narrow land bridge at the Isthmus of Corinth joins the Peloponnese to the Greek mainland, and the Corinth Canal, cut through that isthmus in 1893, still carries ships between the Gulf of Corinth and the Saronic Gulf. The peninsula forms the southernmost part of mainland Greece and is divided among the Peloponnese, Western Greece and Attica administrative regions. Its most populous city, Patras, houses about 170,000 residents, while Kalamata in Messenia counts roughly 55,000.
More about Peloponnese
Covering 21,549.6 square kilometres, the Peloponnese combines rugged mountains with lowland valleys. Mount Taygetus rises to 2,407 metres, making it the highest peak, while Cyllene, Aroania, Erymanthos and Panachaikon punctuate the interior. Four south‑pointing peninsulas—Messenian, Mani, Cape Malea and the Argolid—are separated by the Messenian, Laconian and Argolic Gulfs. Rivers such as the 110‑kilometre Alfeios, the 82‑kilometre Evrotas and the 70‑kilometre Pineios drain the western slopes, and the indented coastline offers numerous beaches that attract visitors. Off the coast lie the Argo‑Saronic Islands to the east and the Ionian Islands to the west; the island of Kythira belongs to the Ionian group, while Elafonisos became an island after the 365 Crete earthquake.
The region’s name recalls the mythic hero Pelops, and its landscape cradles the ruins of the Mycenaean civilization that once dominated the Bronze Age from palaces at Mycenae, Pylos and Tiryns. Legends of Heracles, Perseus and the Trojan War are tied to these ancient sites. Today the peninsula experiences a hot‑summer Mediterranean climate, with the Gulf of Corinth showing a semi‑arid pattern; summer highs exceed 36 °C in Sparta, and Monemvasia recorded a minimum of 35.9 °C in 2007, the highest low temperature ever noted in mainland Greece and continental Europe. The blend of dramatic mountain scenery, historic waterways and mythic heritage makes the Peloponnese a uniquely layered destination.
