Is Bali Safe for Women Traveling Alone?

Bali is generally safe for women traveling alone. Many women from around the world travel alone to Bali, and especially to Ubud, following the success of the book Eat, Pray, Love.

Balinese men are generally benign towards foreign women. Those to watch out for include the so-called “Kuta Cowboys,” men who hang out in Kuta clubs and beaches who prey on women seeking relationships, as well as non-Balinese Indonesian men who are in Bali to do construction or other labor.

Women should exercise some caution. Don’t walk alone late at night in areas where men hang out, and don’t ride scooters alone late at night with an exposed handbag or backpack to avoid becoming a target of theft. It is recommended to dress modestly away from the beaches to avoid unwanted attention.
