Is Crime a Problem in Mexico?

The US State Department rates Mexico at Level 2 ("Exercise Increased Caution") as of 2025, the same level as many European countries. Most tourist areas, including Cancun, Playa del Carmen, Puerto Vallarta, Los Cabos, Mexico City's tourist districts, and San Miguel de Allende, maintain strong security presences and report relatively low crime rates affecting visitors.

The most common issues tourists face are opportunistic crimes like pickpocketing in crowded areas or theft from unattended belongings. To minimize risk, avoid displaying expensive jewelry or electronics, use hotel safes for valuables, and remain aware of your surroundings in markets and busy areas.

Certain regions should be avoided entirely due to organized crime activity. These include the states of Sinaloa (outside Mazatlan), Tamaulipas, and Guerrero (including Acapulco). When in doubt, consult current travel advisories and follow the guidance of your travel coordinator.
