The fer-de-lance (known locally as "nauyaca" or "cuatro narices") and rattlesnakes are among the venomous species found in Mexico, primarily in rural, jungle, and agricultural areas. Resort grounds and urban areas rarely see snake activity.
When hiking or exploring natural areas, wear closed-toe shoes and long pants. Stay on marked trails, watch where you step, and avoid reaching into spaces you cannot see clearly. If you encounter a snake, back away slowly and give it space to retreat.
In the unlikely event of a snakebite, seek medical attention immediately. Keep the affected limb immobilized and below heart level. Modern antivenoms are available at major hospitals. Do not attempt to capture or kill the snake.
