Is the Water Safe to Drink in Mexico?

While water treatment has improved in many areas, the general recommendation remains to avoid tap water. Hotels, restaurants, and resorts throughout Mexico provide purified water for guests, often through large garrafones (water jugs) or bottled water in rooms.

Ice in tourist establishments is typically made from purified water and is safe. Reputable restaurants use purified water in their food preparation as well. If you have concerns, you can always request drinks without ice.

When dining, stick to established restaurants and hotels where water purification is standard practice. Avoid consuming beverages from street vendors unless they come in sealed bottles or cans. For brushing teeth, use bottled water to be safe.
