Are There Many Mosquitoes in Mexico?

Mosquito activity is highest in low-lying coastal regions like the Yucatan Peninsula, the Pacific coast, and southern Mexico. The rainy season (May through October) brings increased mosquito populations. Highland destinations like Mexico City and San Miguel de Allende have significantly fewer mosquitoes.

To minimize bites, use insect repellent containing DEET, picaridin, or oil of lemon eucalyptus. Wear long sleeves and pants during dawn and dusk when mosquitoes are most active. Many hotels provide mosquito netting or screened windows; if not, request them or bring a travel net.

Staying in air-conditioned accommodations significantly reduces mosquito exposure, as mosquitoes avoid cooler environments. Resort properties typically maintain grounds to minimize standing water where mosquitoes breed.
