Tradicionalmente Panamá ha dependido de la energía hidroeléctrica y térmica como fuentes de energía. El 48,4 por ciento de la energía de este país se genera gracias a las fuentes de agua, mientras que el 51.6 por ciento proviene de fuentes térmicas (combustibles fósiles). No obstante, el gobierno está haciendo planes para hacer uso de otros recursos como: el viento, la energía solar y la energía geotérmica; las cuales en la actualidad conforman una parte muy pequeña de la producción total de energía en el país.
