Places you'll stay
Ubud
Set in Bali’s lush interior, Ubud is the island’s cultural hub. As of late, it has become bustling tourist destination which bears little resemblance to a traditional Balinese village. Patches of paradise can still be found in Ubud, and it remains the center for spiritual tourism.
Gili Islands
Three sun-kissed islands form a popular vacation destination off Lombok’s northwest coast. The Gili Islands represent three versions of tropical island paradise. Characterized by white sand beaches and warm turquoise seas, each island — Gili Trawangan, Gili Meno, and Gili Air — has its own personality. The islands are easily reached by boat from Lombok or Bali and are well-known for diving, surfing, partying, and serenity. The Gilis are located in North Lombok Regency, approximately 2.5 hours via transfer from Lombok International Airport.
Seminyak
Seminyak isn’t a traditional Balinese village and it isn’t for visitors looking for relaxation, but it has a charm all its own. Seminyak is located on the southwest coast of the island, directly adjacent to Kuta and Legian, and can be reached in around 30 minutes via private car or taxi service.
Padang Bai
Padang Bai is mainly known for the ferries to Lombok—but it has more to offer. If you’re not in a rush, it might worth carving out a day for this laid-back village. To get here you’ll travel about 1.5 hours from Ubud or nearly 2 hours from Kuta.
Sanur
Set on the southeast coast of Bali, directly east of Kuta and north of the Denpasar airport, Sanur can be reached in around 25 minutes via car. This beach town offers a less intense atmosphere than Kuta, Legian, or Nusa Dua. It also has more Balinese than visitors, the atmosphere is laidback, and the nightlife is mellow. In spite of its relaxed atmosphere, visitors won’t have to look very hard for memorable things to do.
Moments to look forward to
Batur Volcano
Find one of the most spectacular sunrise locations in Bali at the summit of this active volcano. Mount Batur is also known as Gunung Batur and is about 7.5 miles (12 km) east of Kintamani, a mountainous region known for its tree-climbing dogs. The volcano is a UNESCO Heritage site as well as home to one of the largest and most impressive calderas in the world. Spectacular views (and a decent leg workout) are the highlights of this climbing adventure.
Gunung Kawi
Gunung Kawi is filled with a sense of ancient majesty and mystery — no one is sure of its original purpose. One of the oldest archaeological sites in Bali, it has candi (shrines) carved into 8-m high niches on the riverside cliff. This pre-Hindu construction dates back to 11th-century Balinese kings. A walk through spectacular rice fields leads to a path descending into the Pakerisan River Valley, where the monuments rest on the banks of the holy river. They are accompanied by Pura Gunung Kawi, a modern-day Balinese Hindu water temple. Located in Tampaksiring in north-central Gianyar Regency, a half hour north of Ubud, this complex looks and feels like the setting of an Indiana Jones film.
Jatiluwih Rice Paddies
The name Jatiluwih translates to “truly special.” This UNESCO World Heritage Site more than lives up to its name, and has some of the best view of rice paddy-covered slopes in Bali. Over 1,482 acres (600 ha) of picturesque green terraces slope gently along the plateau of Gunung Batukaru at an altitude of 2,296 feet (700 m) above sea level. Jatiluwih offers opportunities for breathtaking photos, outdoor recreation, and a quiet respite from the bustle of the southern areas. It’s about 2 hours north of Denpasar, in the Penebel district of central Bali’s Tabanan Regency.
Tanah Lot
This popular religious landmark is built on a giant rock in the ocean about 984 feet (300 m) offshore and is Bali’s most famous, and certainly most photographed, Hindu temple. If you can navigate your way through busloads of tourists and an army of hawker stands, you’ll be treated to iconic sunset photos. Tanah Lot is 12.4 miles (20 kms) northwest of Denpasar, in the Beraban village of the Tabanan Regency. One of seven sea temples along the Bali coast, it was originally constructed in the 16th century but has seen significant restoration in recent times. The temple can be reached via the bridge at low tide, but inside access is not permitted to non-Hindu visitors.
