East Java
East Java has many hidden treasures for those who want to go off the beaten path. At many places you will get unforgettable impressions of Javanese villages. For centuries life has passed along the same rhythm. Mighty volcanoes watch over idyllic rice fields. For centuries, life hasn’t changed that much. Some of those mountains are easy to climb. The fantastic views from their peaks are simply magnificent. Numerous plantations, remains of the colonial period, are are deeply tucked away in the rainforest. A small strait of nearly one and a half kilometer separates Bali from Java - but between the two islands there is a world of difference.
Banyuwangi
Banyuwangi is the east-most city in Java, this is where the sun first rises in the morning throwing its welcoming rays over Java. This lush green island is densely populated. Banyuwangi Regency extends over an area of 5,800 square km, comprising the southern beaches brushed by the Indian Ocean, to the impressive Mt Raung that stands at 3,282 meters and Mt Merapi at 2,800 meters above sea level.

Kalibaru lies on the main Bayuwangi–Jember road connecting through to Probolinggo, Surabaya, Malang and Yogyakarta, also linked to the aforementioned cities via a well-serviced train line. This little town doesn’t see a lot of action, but is a good base for exploring the nearby plantations and its rural setting offers one of Java’s most scenic landscapes. With an elevation of around 400 metres, the town enjoys year round fresh temperatures that can get downright cold some evenings

Being the largest volcanic region in the province, Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park covers a massive area of 800 square km in the center of East Java. Visitors who have an eager interest in volcanic activities must come to the park and witness the smoke of ashes coming from Mount Semeru, an active volcano that rises 3,676 meters above sea level. Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park is the only conservation area in Indonesia that has a 10 km sea of sand called Tengger, from which four new volcanic cones have emerged. Those volcanic cones are Mount Batok (2,470 m), Mount Kursi (2,581 m), Mount Watangan (2,661 m), and Mount Widodaren (2,650 m). However, Mount Bromo is still the only one that is active. Temperatures at the top of Mount Bromo range about 5-18 degrees Celsius. Heading south of the park is a rolling upland plateau divided by valleys and decorated with several scenic lakes reaching to the foot of Mount Semeru.
