Duration: 9:30 AM to 5:00 PM
Escape the city and discover one of Ayacucho's most interesting cultural and natural destinations.
Your journey begins with a scenic drive to Pikimachay Cave, one of Peru's most important archaeological sites. Archaeological excavations uncovered prehistoric animal remains and evidence of early human occupation dating back more than 18,000 years, making this cave an important landmark in the study of South America's earliest inhabitants.
Along the way, you'll stop at the historic Ayahuarcuna Colonial Bridge, a beautiful stone bridge that has connected communities since colonial times.
The tour continues to Huanta, a picturesque town known as the "Emerald of the Andes" thanks to its mild climate and fertile countryside filled with avocado, cherimoya, lucuma, and other fruit orchards.
In Huanta, you'll visit the charming Main Square, the Parish Church, and the impressive Redemptorist Convent and Gothic Church, one of the town's most distinctive architectural landmarks.
Later, enjoy a visit to the beautiful Occochaca Waterfall, followed by stops at local artisan producers where you'll learn about and sample traditional fruit liqueurs, locally harvested honey, chicha de jora, and the traditional seven seed chicha, a popular regional beverage.
This relaxing full day excursion offers an excellent introduction to the archaeology, history, traditions, and flavors of the Ayacucho region.
